Overview

Our mission is to provide excellent patient care and comprehensive education for future internists and specialists in medicine/pediatrics as well as an intern level education for those residents in our preliminary medicine internship program. We have an involved, dedicated faculty, fine clinical facilities, and a collegial, supportive environment. Whether you aspire to become a community-based generalist, a scientifically and technically sophisticated subspecialist, a clinical investigator, or a research scientist, we have the resources to encourage and support the achievement of your goals.

The Department of Medicine includes over 100 full-time faculty representing general internal medicine and each of the subspecialties of medicine. Additionally, we have close affiliation with the Department of Geriatric Medicine and the Adolescent Medicine Division in the Department of Pediatrics. Currently 70 interns and residents are in our core program and 35 subspecialty trainees are in our fellowship programs. We are large enough to include the rich spectrum of internal medicine, but not so large that individual residents get lost in a confusing maze.

Our principal clinical facilities include Presbyterian Tower, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and the newly-remodeled Children's Hospital and Women's and Newborn Pavilion. Compared with some medical centers, whose principal clinical sites are geographically disperse, we benefit by having facilities located adjacent to one another on a unified campus.

The Department of Medicine offers first-year (PGY-1) resident positions via the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) in the following:

  1. Categorical Medicine (16 positions) (NRMP Code 158816) - for those individuals who seek to be fully qualified and board-certified in internal medicine. This is the traditional 3-year internal medicine residency experience. Applications for these positions are offered via ERAS.
  2. Preliminary Medicine (8 positions) (NRMP Code 158815) - for those individuals who ultimately plan to pursue training in disciplines such as Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Radiology, etc. which require a broad one-year clinical internship. The structure and scope of this year is essentially the same as that for the categorical residents, however it can be tailored to the specific needs of the candidate where necessary. These positions are offered through ERAS.
  3. Medicine-Pediatrics (3 positions) (NRMP Code 158830) - This integrated four-year program prepares residents for comprehensive health care of individuals in all age groups and ultimately for dual certification in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Clinical rotations generally consist of alternating three-month blocks in the sponsoring departments, with on-going continuity clinics in each specialty throughout the resident's experience. These positions are offered through ERAS.
